Kinetic magnetic wood sculpture. This Oak branch had a natural occlusion that I chiseled away until I had it hollow so I could mount the acorn and the super strong n52 magnets inside. I do these because they make me happy, I love to watch the magnet move. 11"

Apple root burls are some of my favorites to expose in this way, but it takes many hours of sitting over the piece pulling out all of the parts that need to go so that we can see the beauty of the live hard roots running throughout. Panel configuration, all pith and bark removed by hand. This beautifully featured stand alone piece is finished in epoxy glaze. 9"

The house I grew up in had a tremendous Hackberry in the back yard, the wonderfully kind people living there suffered my random knock on the door and let me have a bit that had been recently trimmed. I thought I was just going to cut it square, but it surprised me with a weak heart that eventually exposed this beautiful grain and left room for something playful with the magnets I like so much. Study in form #2 straight lines. Cubed cross-section cutaway with magnetic Dragonfly* and hollow top knot. Hand finished with tung oil.

Most people look at this and ask if it’s wood. It has an almost stone or ceramic look to it. I believe that is a result of my trying to purely follow the flow and character of the wood it was carved from. It truly looks to me like it just fell out of the sky and into m hand in it’s current shape. A real treat to create and enjoy. This piece started as one clump with a solid bark covering. Between 40 and 50 hours were required to remove everything but the live shoots inside, but the results are breathtaking. Every time I look at this piece I see a myriad of new features with intricate natural designs that are pleasing to my eye. Radiant configuration. All pith and bark hand-removed. Polyurethane finish, mounted. A personal favorite. 16"

This oil-only finished board has exceptional color and grain pattern that reminds me of a seascape without adding anything but a hand rubbed finish and wax. Mounted on concrete and epoxy base (not shown).

Oak Inner turbulence hand sculpted form. I was really trying to work with the flow of the wood in expressing an artistic form while respecting the aspect of the piece. The swirling interlocking grain features revealed by the epoxy glaze balance the simple shape of this piece. 12"

Kinetic magnetic suspension sculpture. This is the piece that got me started on mixing magnets and wood. The clean shapes and simple design really let the eye focus on the suspended magnet. I use super strong n52 magnets so there is plenty of pull across the gap, no matter which ring magnet you set it under (yes you can grab the magnet on the string and move it from one to the other and it will stay) I love to look at these and move the magnet back and forth, or just poke the suspended magnet and watch it wiggle on and on.

Silver Maple log, study in form, sanding spiral, all free-hand form. It’s a playful study piece that I found visually satisfying, so I mounted it on a ball bearing and you can spin it around and around. Saved from the fire with hand rubbed poly finish. 14"

When I see where a long gone branch has left a natural wound opening that the tree tries to heal around, it usually sparks my imagination about what is inside of there. This piece will show you what is in there, and it is really cool! I include a mirror panel for this to sit on so that you can see the interior by looking through any of the openings left for exactly that purpose. When I started working with wood, I wanted to make one of these. After finding a 100+ yr old Lane Red Cedar box from my grandma’s garage and repairing/refinishing it, I discovered a nice resonant tone in the wood, so I set right to work. This drum is not tuned to any scale but I do find the sounds it produces to be pleasing Purple Heart and Red Cedar 10 tongue log drum, hand finished. 12 x 15 x 31
