The house I grew up in had a tremendous Hackberry in the back yard, the wonderfully kind people living there suffered my random knock on the door and let me have a bit that had been recently trimmed. I thought I was just going to cut it square, but it surprised me with a weak heart that eventually exposed this beautiful grain and left room for something playful with the magnets I like so much. Study in form #2 straight lines. Cubed cross-section cutaway with magnetic Dragonfly* and hollow top knot. Hand finished with tung oil.

Most people look at this and ask if it’s wood. It has an almost stone or ceramic look to it. I believe that is a result of my trying to purely follow the flow and character of the wood it was carved from. It truly looks to me like it just fell out of the sky and into m hand in it’s current shape. A real treat to create and enjoy. Study in form to discern and highlight the natural character of this exotic piece. Hand carved Hickory bowl finished in epoxy glaze. 6"

This piece started as one clump with a solid bark covering. Between 40 and 50 hours were required to remove everything but the live shoots inside, but the results are breathtaking. Every time I look at this piece I see a myriad of new features with intricate natural designs that are pleasing to my eye. Radiant configuration. All pith and bark hand-removed. Polyurethane finish, mounted. A personal favorite. 16"

This finely detailed and oil finished burl cap has absolutely captivating features on all sides. I finished it to 1200 grit and intend for it to be touched and felt as well as seen. It looks great sitting in the center of my fireplace mantle. I bet it would wonderful on yours too. Stand not included.
